For an EU-bound recreational RIB, compliance evidence is a controlled chain, not a single universal certificate. Buyers should be able to understand which documents describe the approved model, which documents apply to the final configuration, and which records identify the individual boat being shipped.
The exact route depends on the product scope, intended use, length, design category, propulsion and target-market requirements. This article is a buyer-review framework, not legal advice or a substitute for a competent conformity-assessment review.
The three levels of evidence
A practical document structure usually has three connected levels:
- Master model file: product definition, drawings, calculations, applicable requirements, test evidence and controlled standards for the model or model family.
- Variant or configuration record: the approved differences for hull, tube material, console, engine arrangement, capacity, equipment and branding.
- Individual build and traceability pack: the serial or WIN/HIN reference, production checks, material links, final inspection and shipment record for one boat.
The third level matters because a compliant model file does not by itself prove that every shipped configuration matches the evaluated design.
What buyers should compare
Use the same model and configuration identifiers across the quotation, GA drawing, specification sheet, builder's plate, owner manual, EU Declaration of Conformity and final inspection record. Differences in length, design category, maximum load, passenger count, engine limit or equipment can change the evidence required.
For EU projects, ask how the supplier controls:
- the applicable conformity-assessment route and responsible parties;
- the technical file and its revision history;
- the EU Declaration of Conformity and its signing entity;
- the builder's plate and WIN/HIN placement;
- the owner manual and destination-language requirements;
- production changes, substitutions and re-inspection.
A document with a familiar logo is not enough. The buyer needs to know its scope, model reference, revision, date and relationship to the boat being purchased.
Public, controlled and confidential information
A responsible supplier can demonstrate capability without publishing another customer's complete technical file. A useful three-level access model is:
- Public: compliance process, document index, selected standards, controlled examples and model-level scope statements.
- RFQ stage: model-specific document list, redacted declaration examples, builder's-plate layout, manual contents and requested test summaries.
- NDA or project stage: complete drawings, calculations, bills of material, detailed test records and customer-specific technical files where appropriate.
This approach lets buyers assess whether a project is viable while protecting confidential engineering data and third-party information.
Questions for an EU RIB project
Before requesting a quotation, state the intended use, target country, hull length, propulsion plan, design category if known, final brand, expected quantity and whether the boat will be sold complete or supplied partly completed. Ask which party will act as the legal manufacturer and which party will retain the controlled technical documentation.
